THREE MONTHS LIFE
AUTHOR: Cynthia
Scenes 1. Confirmed Diagnosis
In the hospital
C: Hi!
G: Hey! How’s it going?
C: Quite well.
G: Good! So, tell me about it. What’s wrong?
C:(coughing)Well, Rose, I’ve been having this cold for nearly a month. You know that getting cold every fall has become kind of annual routine for me, but this time I feel particularly weak. And those medicines I used to take don’t work this time.
G: Really? That sounds bad. You say that you’ve been having this cold for nearly a month?!
C: yeah!
G: Well, I think we need to run some further examinations. After that I’ll be able to tell you what’s going on.
C: Thanks!
G: Don’t be. Just come back for a week later.
C: OK
A WEEK LATER…
G: (looking at those medical reports with a serious face)
C: Hey! So, what did you find?
G:Hey! Em… Cynthia I need to tell you something
C: All right! What’s that? (FEW SECONDS BRESK) wait, why you looks so down? You scare me Rose.
G: Cynthia, I’m so sorry to tell you this, but what you’ve been having nearly a month is not a cold, it’s something worse
C :OK, what is it?
G:(LOOKING STRAIGHT INTO CYNTHIA’S EYES, LOOKING SAD)IT’S AIDS.
C: WHAT???!!!!! YOU GOTTA BE KIDING ME, ROSE! THIS IS NOT FUNNY!
G: Sorry darling I’m serious. Based on the initial exam, we think you probably have Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, which is called AIDS for short. Cynthia you’ve got AIDS for a very long time how could you not possibly feel a damn thing!
C: I thought it was just cold (almost crying) what should I do Rose? I don’t wanna die!
G: CALM DOWN HONEY, JUST CALM DOWN! I am always here for you.
C: How bad it is”
G:well, based on your medical reports, I’d say 3 months… the most…
C:(remain silence)
G: I’m so sorry.
C: Well thank you for your honesty Rose, I think I’m gonna make some phone calls.
(stand up and leaving)
G: Hey! Cynthia, you can always come to me, not as a doctor but as a friend.
C:(smile back and close the door)

C: I’m…fine…(bitter smiling) Look Joan, I need to tell you something. Something really important.
F1: Fine! What is it?
C: I just got out of the hospital. The doctor told me that …I got AIDS… there is only 3 months left for me.
F1:(wait for few seconds and burst into laughter)Come on Cynthia, did you set on the wrong calendar again? Today’s not The April Fool’s Day
C: It’s true, Joan! I’m not messing up with you. I’m really dying!
F1: Cynthia you are a grown-up, maybe next time try something new to catch my attention. I don’t have time for this. (hang up)

C: Sorry darling, I can’t make it. I … er… I’m badly ill.
F2: What? Are you all right? What’s going on?
C: Well, I got AIDS. I only have 3 months.
F2: AIDS?! Oh man, who you’ve been dating to?!
C: Helen, just let me explain this…

G: Just take it, you definitely need this.
M: Are you the girl with AIDS?
(both Cynthia and Rose keep silence)
G: So what? She’s trying to help you.
M: Who the hell knows I won’t end up like her. (leaving)
(keep walking)
G: This is discrimination. WE NEED TO FIGHT BACK!
C: And draw more attention to my life and disease? How much energy do we really want to devote to all this? I’m too tired.
G: I know, but every time I see you being treated like this, I just can’t help to be angry..
